For the past year I have had weeks on top of weeks that I just can't sleep very well. I have a hard time shutting my brain off at night and the more I think about it the longer I am staring at the clock watching the hours rush by and morning drawing closer. I have tried everything from praying, reading, listening to music, taking a hot shower, even watching a movie hoping I would get tired but none of them seem to work anymore. Am I the only one that struggles with this? I had mentioned it to my doctor once and he started diagnosing me with depression and anxiety and wanted to put me on "happy pills". Well, I tried them and they made me nauseous and even more anxious so I stopped taking them right away. Does anyone have any suggestions other than sleeping pills? Those things scare me.

Sorry Charlie, I do take 1/2 of a Tylenol pm every now and then. I had a night like that last night and the little blue pill gave me a great nights sleep.
Hope you find something other than a pill. Not falling asleep is so annoying!
I do struggle with this from time to time. It is so very frustrating watching the time go by and knowing how tired you're going to be in the morning.
I do take sleeping pills- very occasionally b/c they scare me too.
It seems though once I take them for 1 night and get some sleep the next night goes a little better all on it's own.
I'll pray you get a good nights sleep tonight.
I talked to Adam about this last fall and he helped me a lot! He gave me some natural supplements because my cortisol levels were off. He also suggested that when I get tired, like the first time in the evening, start winding down and go to bed then. I started doing that (b/c I was staying up after I was tired and pushing through my sleep cycle) and it helped A LOT! If you get some time, he'd be a good resource. Hope you get good z's soon! Love you, xoxox
I have had this problem and someone gave me the advice to do what he called a "brain dump" before going to bed. Everything that is on your mind write it down and organize it if it needs to be organized. Organize them such as "Some day maybe", "do tomorrow" "do in a week"...Sometimes things do not need to be organized, but rather just written down to get your mind off of them.
have the same issues, but usually because i have a household that awakens me during the night. so now i'm just programmed for it.
i try to repeat the verses like, "cast you care upon Jesus for He cares for you", "be anxious for nothing..."
Tylenol PM. Check first to make sure it won't react with any medication you might be taking.
I used to take that stuff (b/c of arthritic hips) all the time, but stopped when I got pregnant. I haven't got back on it because I like to listen for JS. My hubby sleeps through anything, and I've got it in my head that at least one of us should be "alert" while sleeping. Does that make sense?
Oh! I'm glad you're cautious about the sleeping pills, but you really need not be too scared of them. Just follow the directions and talk to your doc.
I too have the same problem. I keep paper and a pen next to my bed and if I am worried about something or wake up in the middle of the night thinking about something I write it on the paper. Then I don't lay there and dwell on it as much.
I also struggle with anxiety and the "happy pills" really helped too! You need to give them some time, the nausea will go away.
I suffer from an over active brain and it seems as though it always hits me at bedtime - During the day there are more distractions, I guess. I occasionally take Xanax if I feel an anxiety attack, but stopped taking the daily happy pills because of adverse effects, too. Like others have suggested, I find that journaling has had a positive affect on my inability to sleep!
Hope you are able to sleep soon!
Yeah I tried sleeping pills earlier this week and they did a number on me.
Have you heard of Enlyten? It's supposed to be agreat natural sleeping aid - melatonin in it or something. Anyway - I've heard it mentioned around me twice in the past two weeks.
